Attractions in Dresden's old city
Frauenkirche
The world-famous Frauenkirche has a free-standing. sandstone dome and is considered the most important protestant baroque building in Germany. In 2005, reconstruction work was completed. Since then the Frauenkirche has been one of the main sightseeing attractions of the city on the Elbe.
Dresden Zwinger
The Dresden Zwinger (Bailey) is an impressive museum complex; it is surrounded by the Residenzschloss (Dresden Castle), Hofkirche, Semperoper and Theaterplatz along with beautiful gardens. In the past the Zwinger was the central festival site and impressed with its complete harmony of the late Baroque. Today, the Dresden Zwinger contains the Staatliche Museumssammlung (State Museum Collection), such as the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister (Old Masters Picture Gallery), the Mathematisch-Physikalischen Salon, Porcelain Collection and Rüstkammer (Armoury).
Semperoper Dresden
The Semperoper Dresden is one of the most beautiful opera houses in the world and was built in the Italian high renaissance style. You can also visit the splendid building outside of opera performances.
Residenzschloss (Dresden Castle)
The Residenzschloss was the powerhouse of the Saxon dukes and kings. Today, the castle, in the middle of Dresden, is one of the city's most important buildings.
Schinkelwache
The former watch house in Sophienstrasse between the Dresden Zwinger, castle und Semperoper is today a ticket office, e.g. for the Dresden Semperoper.
Procession of Princes
The Procession of Princes is considered to be the largest porcelain picture in the world; it was applied to around 25,000 Meissner porcelain tiles. The 101 metre-long mural presents the 1,000-year history of the royal house or the Saxon regents in an larger-than-life horseback procession and is one of the most-visited sights in Dresden.
Attractions in Dresden-Neustadt
Dresden-Neustadt is the trendy and cultural district of Dresden: Colourful façades, Baroque town houses, many studios and unusual shops attract many artists and give this newly gentrified district its special charm. The Kunsthofpassagen are a real highlight: In the midst of the colourful architecture, you find art exhibitions, individual studio shops and cosy pubs and restaurants. The Neustädter Markt with its equestrian statue of Augustus the Strong, which portrays him as a Roman emperor.
